Florida
Hospital, The First Hospital in the State to Adopt Latest Patient Safety Technology
New system
acts as a "biological smoke alarm" to prevent infection outbreaks.
Orlando, Fla., January 16, 2003 – Florida Hospital has adopted state of the art technology provided by Birmingham-based MedMined, Inc. to protect its patients from a leading cause of hospital complications, hospital-acquired infections.
"Our primary concern at Florida Hospital is quality of care and the safety of our patients," noted Christine Kaptur, Program Manager, Infection Control at Florida Hospital Orlando. "Adopting this state-of-the-art technology to improve patient care further supports our mission to be one of America’s best hospitals."
MedMined will monitor literally billions of early warning signs of possible infection outbreaks, enabling the staff at Florida Hospital to identify and correct potential problems before outbreaks occur. The system will also alert physicians to new antibiotic resistance so that more effective drug selections can be made.
"Florida Hospital is a leader in patient safety," said Dr. Stephen Brossette, MedMined’s president. "MedMined services will advance their mission to provide the best possible care to Florida’s patients."
The new system is in place at all seven Florida Hospital campuses. Florida Hospital, with over 90,000 admissions each year, is the first hospital in the State of Florida to adopt this technology, although it is now used by over twenty hospitals across the country.
Each year these infections are responsible for approximately 88,000 deaths nationwide annually, making them the fourth leading cause of death in the U.S. behind heart disease, cancer and strokes.
