The
Florida Hospital Rehabilitation Center's Vestibular and Balance
Program provides comprehensive evaluation and treatment to patients
having vestibular- and/or balance-related deficits, using a
multi-disciplinary team approach and state-of-the-art equipment.
Appropriate
clients for referral would be those having functional problems
of impaired or unsafe balance, positional or movement-related
vertigo-dizziness, gait ataxia and visual motion sensitivity.
It is critical that patients entering this program have a physician-confirmed
diagnosis related to vestibular or balance pathology.
Treatment
intervention is exercise oriented and is individually designed
toward attaining goals, including:
- Improved
sensory organization and motor coordination to increase
balance.
- Decreasing
positional and movement-related dizziness.
- Improving
visual-vestibular interactions and gaze stability during
head movement.
- Improving
visual following when the head is stationary.
- Improving
level of activity and independence.
- Decrease
risk of fall.
Assessment
and treatment are significantly enhanced with the SMART Balance
Master. This state-of-the-art equipment provides reliable assessment
of balance functions, evaluating sensory parameters using a
moving visual environment in conjunction with a moveable surface.
After identifying under what sensory conditions the patient
may have problems and what movement strategies the patient uses
to maintain balance, a treatment program is developed. The SMART
Balance Master provides quantitative and objective data to support
the evaluation and progress of therapy.
Evaluation
and treatment are provided by a licensed physical therapist
who is responsible for the patient's care throughout the treatment
period, allowing continuity of care for the patient and/or family
members.
When
appropriate, patients can be referred to other disciplinary
team members such as occupational therapists, neuro- physical
therapists, speech therapists, rehab nurses, audiologists, and/or
neuropsychologists, upon request from the referring physician.
Medical
direction and services are provided by a physician specializing
in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
The
program is conveniently located at 5165 Adanson Street in Orlando
(one mile west of I-4 off Lee Road).
